It is a lot of fun experimenting with art material. Especially when using it in a different way, than it was meant for. I am still trying my luck with ordinary chalk pastell sticks.

This time I applied acrylic emulsion with a brush over it to fix it. That gave me interesting structures. Another cool aspect of chalk pastell. I finished the painting with pen, some collage and stamping with Rubber Dance stamps for more structure. The little house photo is an 70 year old original.

I can only encourage you to eyperiment with your art material. It is far better than reading any directions. Trying things out is a win-win situation.

    Ach herrjeh, wie Recht Du hast mit der Win Win Situation und Dein geniales Bild spricht für sich! Diese vollen Farben und das alte Haus auf all den fantastischen Feldern…da würde ich auch gern nach Hause kommen…so idyllisch!

    Yesss, experiemnting is great fun fun and also the best way to learn how stuff work, or doesn’t work … I do like to watch tutorials on specific tools and products, but then try other ways afterwards, just testing and see what happens. Your piece today reminds me of fields where different flowers and other produce are growing in separate sections. Summer feeling! 😀
    Nice detail to add that old phot of a house. Reminds me of an old Norwegian „stabbur“ (food storage buildings on pillars).

    Das ist großartig Gabriele… ich liebe Deine Felder und das Haus und den Spruch dazu! Herrlich!
    Ich hab auch dieser Tage mal mit Pastellkreiden ( hab verschiedene im Lauf der Jahre gesammelt ) herumgemacht.
    Ich mag sie auch gern mit weissem oder klarem Gesso vermalen oder mit verdünntem weissen Kleber…
    frau könnte soviel Zeit mit Herumprobieren verbringen,… ist das nicht herrlich?!
    Übrigens hab ich jetzt schon öfter mit der Fixativspritze herumgemacht, die Du empfohlen hattest! Das ist echt toll ..ich kauf sicher keine Sprühfläschchen mehr… das war ein genialer Tipp- danke!♥

      Das freut mich echt, Susi! Die Altvorderen wussten schon einiges, was in der Zeit der Fertigprodukte vergessen ging. Die Fixativspritze (die Malerin, von der wiederum ich den Tip habe, nannte sie „Puste“) hat den großen Vorteil, du kannst wirklich alles mit spritzen und man kann es leicht sauber machen.
      Pastell habe ich auch schon mit allem Möglichen vermalt, geht wirklich super und sieht immer wieder anders aus.

    Oh wow Gabriele, this is gorgeous! It makes me think a little bit of a Hundertwasser landscape (you know this artist?) Chalk pastels – acrylic emulsion… does that work together? I get the feeling you would smear the chalk all over, but you are right: we should try things out and let us be surprised by what happens. I am very busy working on a commision these days but I look forward to the end of May, I will have time again to experiment and try things out then. I might even look for my chalk pastels (they are somewhere in a box….) Have a nice, sunny week. Love from the Netherlands, Marit

      Thank you Marit! Chalks are practically pigments and it works even when you water the emulsion. So you get transparent paint or opaque, depending on how much chalk you use. It is fun. I like to use materials that normally don´t work together. The process mostly leads to new ideas.
